Ten Ways to Enjoy the Fall Weekend Weather

Ten Ways to Enjoy the Fall Weekend Weather

Fall is in the air and that means gorgeous yellow and orange foliage, everyone’s favorite pumpkin coffees, and cozy oversized sweaters. But fall also means tons of fun weekend activities that you can still participate in while social distancing!  A lot might have gotten canceled this year, but you can still get out and enjoy your weekend with these ten fall activities!

Visit a Pumpkin Patch

It’s not officially fall until you visit your first pumpkin patch of the season.  Take your family or friends out to one of the many pumpkin patches that Pennsylvania has to offer.  Pick some pumpkins for carving, eat a caramel apple or two and even take some great fall photos for social media! This is a family event that all ages will be sure to love.

Take a Bike Ride

Calling all Pittsburgh cyclists! Whether you like to ride on the road, on the trails or just enjoy a casual afternoon ride, Pittsburgh is the perfect place to get out and enjoy the changing leaves by bike!  There are plenty of trails all over the city including the GAP Trail that will take you all the way to Washington D.C.

Tailgate from Home

There’s nothing like waking up in the morning to the crisp fall air, changing leaves, and College Gameday playing on the TV.  Even though game days won't feel quite the same this year, you can still create a tailgate vibe inside or out with the right snacks and a few friends over to cheer on your favorite team from your couch!

Watch a Fall-Themed Movie

Many streaming services are packed with seasonal films right now! Share an old favorite with the family or let everyone pick one to watch and make a couple evenings out of it! Disney Plus is currently streaming all of the classic Disney films like Hocus Pocus and The Nightmare Before Christmas.  To make it even more fun, try hanging a sheet on your house and projecting the movie to enjoy the fall weather!

Carve Pumpkins

Spooky season would not be complete without carving a pumpkin!  After you hit the pumpkin patch you can carve, paint or basically decorate your pumpkins anyway you can think of.  Don’t forget to save your pumpkin seeds to roast for a yummy treat.

Camp Out in Your Backyard

You don’t have to go far to have some camping fun. This weekend, surprise your kids by popping up a tent in your own backyard! This is a great activity to get your family excited about the great outdoors!  No camping experience would be complete without a bonfire and some smores! You can even try making some campfire hot cocoa or hot apple cider!

Go for a Hike

Pittsburgh has some really great hiking trails and spots just minutes outside of the city! October is the best time to take advantage of the many spots now that the leaves are in peak fall color.  Check out the complete list of hiking spots to plan your weekend getaway!

Visit a Farmers Market

Farmers Markets are a great way to get out and support your local farmers! There’s nothing like waking up on a Saturday, grabbing a coffee, getting in that early workout, and heading to the nearest farmers market. They make it easy to buy local, eat and cook healthy dishes, and enjoy the weekend weather.   You might even be able to pick up some pumpkins and small house decorations while you’re at it!

Have a Picnic

The weather is perfect. It’s the most wonderful time of year for everyone who likes not-too-hot and not-too-cold. Why not enjoy it with a nice picnic lunch at a local park? You can make it even better if you pack a couple of autumn treats, like pumpkin lattes, bread, and pies. This is a super budget-friendly and fun activity for the whole family!

Build a Pile of Leaves

It might take a little bit of work, but building a pile of leaves can be a great weekend activity for your kids! Those leaves will need to be raked up anyway, so why not have a little bit of fun and get the whole family involved.  You can have your kids help out in the manual labor so they can have fun after the chores are done.

From a casual Sunday afternoon watching football to an adventure-packed weekend full of camping and hiking, the fall activities are limitless! Getting your family together to participate in all the fall activities that Pittsburgh has to offer is a great way to get in the fall spirit and enjoy the weather!
